For many years, all those since I have actively struggled with an eating disorder, I have thought about how my experiences can be channeled into doing something positive. When I last spent time spent at a residential eating disorder treatment center, I learned what has been most important in my journey towards recovery. There I became aware of a principal that I had never before understood: recovery is absolutely possible. That is that recovery from eating disorders and poor self-image or body negativity is absolutely possible, albeit the struggle to heal is real.
And so, I decided to start a company promoting body positivity and eating disorder recovery in order to build community for people who have struggled to maintain comfort within their own skin.
I came to the name CALL ME HOPE because it embodies the concept I believe most fundamental to helping people to heal from the wounds they have endured. Of all the things we need to ensure recovery and social change that is inclusive for people of all body sizes and shapes, hope is the most important one. Without it, nothing is possible. So I have this new image, one of a butterfly person standing in a celebratory pose—wings spread and ready to fly. This person is named Hope and the image symbolizes a plan to bring people together in the name of body positivity and recovery. I think of this figure as a bit of a guardian angel who now sits on my own shoulder and calls to me whenever I struggle to remember the truth; I can continue to heal and treat my body with the respect it deserves.
We deserve to have community in life. People function in a much more positive manner when they feel seen and heard. And, unfortunately, body shame often leads people into traps maintained by secrecy and avoidance. On my website I am opening a forum for people to post their thoughts, stories, artwork and even performances in a manner that promote a sense of possibility outside of that world. I will share my own experiences in regard to my own path towards recovery via journals that I write, but am really advocating for a place for others to contribute as I, personally, have found my greatest inspiration has come from others facing similar journeys.
Please don’t forget to help us by contributing your ideas by submitting posts to leslielane@callmehope.com where I can review them. Finally PLEASE spread the message that body positivity and recovery are absolutely positive.
Thank you for visiting our site.
Sincerely,
Leslie Lane
